UP Wrecking White Rum Limited Edition Essence 20 ml

White rum has an undeserved reputation for being tasteless – something you tip into the blender and forget about. Wrecking is made to knock a hole in that myth. This is a white rum that tastes of its raw material, with the green, juicy freshness of sugar cane at its heart and enough personality to be drunk neat.

The essence belongs to the Ultra Premium series and is released as a Limited Edition, in a restricted run. Compared with an ordinary white rum there is quite simply more of everything here: more aroma, more fruit, more pepper. At the same time the style is dry and taut, without the sweetness that sometimes creeps in. Think of a freshly pressed stalk of sugar cane, a peeled lime and a ripe pineapple on the same chopping board.

Colour & Appearance

The finished drink is crystal clear with an almost silvery sheen. It moves lightly and nimbly in the glass – a first sign of the dry, lively style.

Nose

The nose is green and fresh. Fresh sugar cane juice and new-mown grass dominate, with lime zest and a waft of sea breeze close behind. Beneath the green lies the fruit: ripe banana, pineapple and a little pear, seasoned with freshly ground white pepper.

Palate

The palate is dry, clean and full of life. The sugar cane comes first – juicy, vegetal, slightly grassy – and is followed at once by lime, which brings a perky acidity. Then the fruit spreads out: banana and pineapple, ripe but never sweet-shop sweet. The white pepper gives a clear, prickling bite in the middle of the tongue, and a faint mineral saltiness holds the whole together. The body is light but the flavour stays put, and it is precisely that combination that makes it so good in sharp, citrusy drinks.

Finish

The finish is medium-long, dry and refreshing. Lime, grass and white pepper linger, and last of all a mild note of ripe pineapple.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished spirit that is ready to drink straight away. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• Rum sour: rum, freshly squeezed lime and sugar syrup, shaken hard and strained into a chilled glass.
• Ti’ punch style with a slice of lime, a little cane sugar and an ice cube.
• A Mojito where the rum can actually be heard through the mint.
• With tonic and grapefruit zest – unexpectedly elegant.
• Neat and lightly chilled, for those who want to taste the sugar cane.
