UP Orange Absinthe Essence 20 ml
Anise and orange are an old love match in the kitchen – think of fennel salad with orange segments, or bitter orange peel in the spice blends of Christmas. In UP Orange Absinthe they get to meet in the glass. This is our orange absinthe, entirely natural and flavoured with real orange oil, yet still with all the herbs an absinthe should contain.
Orange oil is not found in classic absinthe, and it is what makes the flavour so individual: the sun-warmed fruitiness of the citrus lifts the bitterness of the wormwood and makes the anise fresher still. An absinthe for those who want the ritual and the herbs – and something new to discover at the same time.
Colour & Appearance
Once mixed, the absinthe glows a warm orange, like a sunset or a ripe clementine. With ice-cold water it clouds into a soft, apricot-coloured opal – pastel and opaque, with a paler halo at the rim of the glass.
Nose
The nose is like grating orange peel over a herb garden. Sweet orange oil and the more bitter note of bitter orange come first, followed immediately by green anise and star anise. Beneath the citrus lie fennel, dry wormwood and hyssop, and the coriander seed’s own orange-like note ties fruit and herbs together.
Palate
The palate is juicy on entry: orange peel, a little zest and a sweet, sun-ripened fruitiness. Then the classic absinthe takes over with cool anise, rounded fennel and a distinct, aromatic wormwood bitterness that is joined by the bitter orange’s own bite – two kinds of bitterness that reinforce one another in an elegant way. Lemon balm and hyssop keep the middle green and fresh. The drink is dry, herbal and bittersweet, just as an absinthe should be, but the citrus makes it livelier and more playful. With water it turns smooth and almost creamy.
Finish
The finish is long, with orange peel and anise taking turns to fade. Last of all comes a clean, dry bitterness from wormwood and bitter orange.
How to Use
The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit – preferably a slightly stronger spirit, since the absinthe is then diluted in the glass. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished absinthe. Instructions are on the label.
Serving Suggestions
- The ritual: a sugar cube on the absinthe spoon and dripping iced water until the drink has become an apricot-coloured opal.
- With freshly squeezed orange juice and ice – a herbal, grown-up brunch drink.
- With tonic and a slice of orange as a bitter long drink.
- With sparkling wine and a twist of orange zest.
- A few drops in chocolate truffles, in an orange salad or over dark chocolate ice cream.
