Some whiskies earn their reputation by being powerful. Legend has earned its own through the opposite – a smoothness so consistent that it has become a byword. This is the whisky that was once composed to be worthy of the very finest guests, and that has stood ever since as the yardstick for what velvet-smooth really means. It is full-bodied, generous and rich in flavour, but never, ever harsh.

Red Leaf Legend Whisky Essence puts that experience in your glass. Compared with the regular Red Leaf – which is light, dry and made for mixing – Legend is an altogether different personality: creamier, sweeter and deeper, a whisky to pour over ice and take your time with. Of smoke there is none at all.

Colour & Appearance

The whisky turns a rich amber with shifting tints of gold and copper red. It sits dense in the glass and leaves slow, broad tears down the side – it looks exactly as soft as it tastes.

Nose

The nose is sweet and inviting. Creamy vanilla, like vanilla fudge or crème brûlée, goes hand in hand with maple syrup and browned butter. Next comes dried fruit – peach, raisins and a little banana – and a mild, bready rye note. Toasted oak and a pinch of nutmeg frame the whole picture.

Palate

The palate is velvet-smooth from start to finish. Vanilla and maple syrup spread out first, soft and full, followed by dried apricot, raisins and ripe peach. The rye is present but rounded – more baking spice than pepper – and the oak contributes lightly toasted notes of nuts and toffee rather than bitterness. The mouthfeel is creamy and almost thick, and everything knits together so well that it is hard to say where one flavour ends and the next begins. It is precisely that harmony which has made the style famous.

Finish

The finish is long, smooth and warm. Vanilla, oak and dried fruit fade out very slowly, with a final sweet note of syrup and a mild spiciness.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit and can be enjoyed straight away. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished whisky. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• On the rocks – one large ice cube, nothing more.
• Neat at room temperature with a square of dark chocolate.
• With ginger ale and a slice of orange for a more luxurious highball.
• Whisky sour with lemon, sugar syrup and egg white.
• With cloudy apple juice and a cinnamon stick, cold or gently warmed.
