Blended whisky is the great socialiser of the whisky world. The idea behind the style is as simple as it is brilliant: let full-bodied malt whisky meet lighter grain whisky, and the result is softer, rounder and more approachable than either alone. UP Blended is our take on precisely that classic middle ground – a whisky without sharp elbows, where nothing sticks out and everything sits in its place.

There is no drama here and no rowdy smoke. Instead you get a calm, harmonious whisky with honey-smooth malt, crisp apple fruit and a thin veil of smoke far away in the wings. It is the bottle to bring out when the company is mixed and everyone should feel at home – the seasoned drinker nods approvingly, and the beginner discovers that whisky can be gentle and delicious.

Colour & Appearance

In the glass the whisky is pale gold, like light honey or ripe straw, with a clear, clean lustre. It moves softly in the glass and makes a quiet, inviting impression.

Nose

The nose is mild and friendly. Pale honey and sweet malt come first, closely followed by green and yellow apples, a little pear and a suggestion of lemon peel. Vanilla lies softly in the middle together with a note of oat biscuit and white bread. At the very back you sense the smoke – more the memory of a crackling fire than an aroma in its own right.

Palate

The palate is round and pleasing from the first sip. The malt brings a soft, bready sweetness that is soon joined by blossom honey, stewed apple and vanilla custard. A light spiciness of cinnamon and white pepper keeps the flavour awake, while a note of almond and pale toffee fills out the middle. The smoke is discreet – noticeable only towards the end, as a thin, dry veil that lends the whisky a touch of gravity. The mouthfeel is smooth and medium-bodied, with no heat.

Finish

The finish is soft and medium-long. Honey, malt and apple fade out at an unhurried pace, leaving behind a fine dryness of toasted oak and one last faint wisp of smoke.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit and can be enjoyed straight away. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished whisky. Instructions are on the label.

• Neat in a tumbler with a splash of fresh water to open up the aromas.
• Over ice after dinner – simple and relaxing.
• In a gentle long drink with soda water or cloudy apple juice.
