UP Absinthe Ladies 15 Essence 20 ml

Not everyone wants their absinthe as austere and bitter as tradition dictates. Ladies 15 is our answer for those who would like a milder absinthe: the same herbs, the same ritual and the same beautiful louche in the glass, but with rounder corners. The number in the name gives the thujone content – 15 mg per finished bottle, which is lower than the 35 mg that is usual in our absinthes.

In practice this means the wormwood takes a step back and lets the brighter herbs speak. Green anise, fennel and lemon balm stand in the foreground, and the whole becomes softer, a shade sweeter and more floral. An excellent first absinthe for the curious, and a pleasing glass for those who already know that elegance comes before power.

Colour & Appearance

As the iced water slowly drips into the glass, milk-white ribbons rise through the drink until everything has become a soft, opalescent mist. It is the same spectacle that belonged to the green hour of the artists’ cafés – and it works because the essence contains real absinthe ingredients.

Nose

The nose is friendly and inviting. Sweet green anise and fennel seed come first, with lemon balm and a light floral note of hyssop just behind. The wormwood is sensed as a dry, herbal undertone rather than a leading role, and coriander adds a discreet citrus spice.

Palate

The palate is smooth and bittersweet, with the emphasis on the sweet. The anise is round and almost creamy, the fennel brings a green freshness and the star anise a warm liquorice note. The bitterness of wormwood is still there – without it this would not be absinthe – but it is mild and well tucked in. With water and a sugar cube the drink becomes soft as silk, with a fine balance between herbal dryness and floral sweetness.

Finish

The finish is medium-long, clean and cool. Anise and lemon balm linger, and the bitterness leaves behind only a light, appetising dryness.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished absinthe with 15 mg thujone per bottle. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• With a sugar cube on an absinthe spoon and slowly dripping iced water – the gentle profile makes the ritual especially approachable.
• With sparkling wine and a twist of lemon peel as an elegant pre-dinner drink.
• With lemon soda or soda water and masses of ice.
• With elderflower cordial and soda – floral meets floral.
• A few drops over lemon sorbet to round off dinner.
