UP Absinthe Eucalyptus Essence 20 ml
Absinthe is the herb drink above all others: wormwood, anise, fennel, hyssop and lemon balm woven into something dry and bittersweet. The question we asked ourselves was what happens if you let one more leaf into the bouquet – the cool, almost camphor-fresh eucalyptus leaf. The answer was an absinthe that feels like a deep breath in a damp forest after rain.
The eucalyptus does not take over. It settles like a cool breeze across the anise and amplifies what is already the hallmark of absinthe: the freshness, the herbal character and the long, clean close. For anyone who enjoys the ritual from the green hour of the artists’ cafés but wants a glass with extra lift, this is an obvious choice.
Colour & Appearance
In the glass, the transformation is the show. As the ice-cold water drips through the sugar cube, milky veils first form along the bottom, then the whole drink clouds into an opalescent, pearl-white haze – the sign that real absinthe ingredients are present in the essence.
Nose
The nose is strikingly fresh. Eucalyptus and a menthol-cool note reach you first, followed at once by green anise and star anise. Beneath the surface lie the dry, slightly dusty herbal tones of wormwood, fennel seed, hyssop and a citrus-like waft of lemon balm and coriander. Think pine forest, herbal tea and liquorice root.
Palate
The palate begins with the sweetish coolness of anise and quickly moves into a dry, herbal middle where the wormwood contributes its characteristic bitterness. The eucalyptus arrives as a wave in the second half – cool, woodland and lightly camphorous – and makes the whole feel cleaner and lighter than in an ordinary absinthe. With water and sugar the bitterness softens, the fennel grows clearer and the drink takes on a bittersweet, almost creamy roundness.
Finish
The finish is long, cool and clean. Eucalyptus and anise linger on the palate while the bitterness of the wormwood fades out, dry and elegant.
How to Use
The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished absinthe with 35 mg thujone per bottle. Instructions are on the label.
Serving Suggestions
- Traditional: place a sugar cube on the absinthe spoon and let ice-cold water drip slowly until the glass turns milky.
- As a frappé over crushed ice with a mint leaf.
- With tonic, cucumber and lime – the eucalyptus makes the long drink extra cooling.
- A few drops in a gin sour for a woodland, herbal twist.
- With cloudy apple juice and soda in a tall glass.
