Sugar-Free Triple Sec Liqueur Essence 20 ml

Ask a bartender which liqueur is hardest to do without and the answer is often triple sec. The clear orange liqueur features in more classic drinks than almost any other bottle on the shelf – Margarita, Cosmopolitan, Sidecar, White Lady – and acts as sweetener and flavouring at one and the same time. Sugar-Free Triple Sec Liqueur Essence gives you that workhorse in a new guise.

The sweetness is already in the essence, so all you need to add is spirit. The liqueur is just as sweet as a regular triple sec and behaves the same way in drink recipes – same measures, same balance against the citrus juice. We were early to offer sugar-free liqueur essences, and triple sec is the one that keen drink-makers get the most use out of.

Colour & Appearance

The finished liqueur is completely colourless and clear as spring water, with a slight viscosity that shows when it runs down the glass. In a drink it adds flavour and sweetness without affecting the colour.

Nose

The nose is like zesting an orange straight over the glass. Sweet orange oil dominates, with the drier, more perfumed note of bitter orange behind it. There is a little orange blossom too, and a clean, cool freshness.

Palate

The palate is intense and clean. Sweet orange comes first, juicy and sunny, but quickly shifts towards the aromatic oils of the peel and a fine little bitterness from bitter orange. It is that balance – sweet, fresh and ever so slightly bitter – that makes triple sec so useful. The sweetness is round and full as in a regular liqueur, and the spirit gives a warm, dry close that lets the citrus take centre stage.

Finish

The finish is long and citrus-fresh. Orange peel and a light, appetising bitterness stay on the tongue, with a sweet note of orange marmalade right at the back.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit – no added sugar is needed, because the sweetness is in the essence. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished liqueur, ready to use straight away. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• In a Margarita with lime juice and a salted rim.
• In a Cosmopolitan with vodka, cranberry juice and lime.
• In a Sidecar or White Lady – two classics that demand a good orange liqueur.
• Over ice with a strip of orange peel as a simple after-dinner drink.
• A splash in fruit salad, crêpe batter or chocolate mousse.
