There is a very particular scent that belongs to early summer: a punnet of sun-warmed strawberries on the kitchen worktop, so ripe they are almost falling apart. That scent – red, sweet and a little floral – is probably the closest a flavour can come to pure happiness. PR Strawberry Vodka Essence captures it in a form that may surprise you: a completely uncoloured, clear vodka where the berries are there in aroma and taste but not in the colour.

So this is no strawberry liqueur. The drink is dry, light and clean, with the fruit as a true-to-life note on top of the grain vodka. That makes it more useful than most strawberry drinks – it is as much at home in a shot glass at a midsummer lunch as in an elegant cocktail, and the sweetness is yours to decide.

Colour & Appearance

Once mixed, the vodka is crystal clear, without the slightest pink shimmer. That such a bright, colourless drink can smell so plainly of red berries is part of the pleasure – guests tend to be astonished. Chilled, it moves softly and roundly in the glass.

Nose

The nose is pure strawberry. First the fresh, sun-ripened berries, then a warmer note of strawberry jam just off the boil. Around the fruit floats something creamy and vanilla-like – a nod to strawberries and cream – and a small green nuance of leaf and hull that lends authenticity. At the base, a clean, cool vodka note.

Palate

The palate is fruity and fine, with the berries clearly centre stage. The attack is juicy and soft, like a ripe strawberry crushed against the roof of the mouth, moving into a jammier, deeper berry character. The lightly creamy roundness carries through here too and gives a smooth mouthfeel, even though the drink is dry. A small, fresh acidity keeps the flavour alive, and the grain vodka closes with a clean, quiet warmth. The whole is easy-drinking and summery without being childish.

Finish

The finish is clean, fruity and medium in length. Strawberry and a touch of vanilla linger, dry and fresh, without the sticky sweetness that sweet berry drinks so often leave behind.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit and can be enjoyed straight away. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished strawberry vodka. Instructions are on the label.
