PR Dark Rum is the essence for anyone who wants precisely that reassuring, classic style: no fuss, no surprises, just really good dark rum.

This is the all-rounder of the drinks cabinet. It does the job in a simple rum and cola on a Friday night, it lifts a glass of pineapple juice into a holiday drink, and it is exactly what is needed when the recipe calls for two tablespoons of rum in the chocolate cake. A flavour most people like, and one with which almost nothing can go wrong.

Colour & Appearance

The finished drink takes on a deep, warm amber colour leaning towards mahogany, with coppery-red glints when the light falls through it. In the glass it looks full and inviting, just as a dark rum should.

Nose

The nose is soft and sweet without being heavy. Molasses and dark brown sugar sit at the centre, surrounded by cream toffee, raisins and vanilla pod. After a while come freshly brewed coffee, cocoa and a light spiciness of cinnamon and nutmeg.

Palate

The palate is round and generous. First come brown sugar and toffee, then a darker layer of molasses, raisins and prunes. Coffee and cocoa give a lightly roasted depth that keeps the sweetness in check, and the vanilla ties it all together. The spices – cinnamon, nutmeg, a hint of allspice – are soft and warming rather than sharp. The balance between sweet and roasted means the drink works just as well neat as it does in a mixed drink.

Finish

The finish is medium-long and pleasant. Toffee, vanilla and a small note of coffee linger, and last of all a gentle spicy warmth that has you reaching for another sip.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished spirit that is ready to drink straight away. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• Rum and cola with a squeezed wedge of lime and plenty of ice.
• With pineapple or orange juice for a sunny long drink.
• A hot toddy with hot water, honey, lemon and a cinnamon stick.
• In coffee with whipped cream after dinner.
• In the kitchen: rum raisins, chocolate truffles, chocolate fudge cups and sponge cakes.

About the Essence

PR Dark Rum is part of the PR (Prestige) series and is the shop’s classic dark rum – the one you choose when you want a dependable flavour that suits every guest. It is neither extremely heavy nor extremely light, but sits right in the middle of the dark rum spectrum.
