Regents Whisky Essence 20 ml
There is whisky you mix, and then there is whisky you pour when you want to treat yourself. Regents belongs to the latter kind. The style is the lavish blended whisky – the one associated with crystal decanters, deep armchairs and the calm that only settles when nobody is in a hurry. Everything about it comes down to smoothness: the sweetness is honey-soft, the fruit ripe and generous, and the smoke has politely withdrawn.
That makes Regents an unusually easy whisky to love. Those who normally find whisky harsh or smoky tend to be surprised – here it is fruit, nuts and toffee that take centre stage, held together by a creamy maltiness. Yet there is enough depth and herbal nuance to make the experienced drinker linger with their nose in the glass.
Colour & Appearance
Once mixed, the whisky is a warm amber colour with a golden glow, like liquid honey in the evening sun. It moves softly and slowly in the glass and gives an impression of luxury.
Nose
The nose is generous and sweet. Ripe red apples and juicy pears meet heather honey and vanilla pod, and just beneath them toasted hazelnut and butter toffee spread out. A fine herbal quality – a little like dried meadow flowers and heather – gives the aroma lift and elegance. You have to go looking for smoke; at most a faint, warm note far in the background.
Palate
The palate is round, creamy and full. It begins with honey and stewed apple, moves into pears in custard and lands in a nutty mid-palate of hazelnut, marzipan and soft butter toffee. The malt supplies a creamy, biscuity backdrop, and a suggestion of milk chocolate and cinnamon makes the whole even warmer. The herbs return as a fresh nuance that stops the sweetness from becoming heavy. The mouthfeel is what truly sets the style apart – silky, almost oily, without the slightest sharpness.
Finish
The finish is long, soft and sweet. Honey, nuts and vanilla fade away slowly, and a quiet warmth with a little toasted oak and toffee lingers on.
How to Use
The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit and can be enjoyed straight away. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished whisky. Instructions are on the label.
