Picture a beach bar at dusk: crushed ice, wedges of lime, a blender whirring away and a glass misting over in the heat. The rum being poured there is almost always of the same kind – clear, light and friendly, made for mixing. Coquito Rum Essence gives you that classic light white style, but with a little twist of its own.

Where the very driest white rums can feel almost neutral, Coquito has a touch more roundness. A hint of sweetness, a soft vanilla note and a streak of coconut make it especially rewarding in creamy and fruity drinks. The name means little coconut, and it is precisely that small coconut wink that makes the essence something of its own.

Colour & Appearance

The finished drink is completely clear and transparent, bright as spring water. Nothing in its appearance gives away the soft flavour – that comes as a pleasant surprise only when the glass nears your nose.

Nose

The nose is clean and light. Fresh sugar cane and vanilla sugar sit on top, together with grated lime zest and a touch of lemon. Beneath them is a discreet note of desiccated coconut and almond, and a faint floral element.

Palate

The palate is soft, smooth and easy-drinking. It opens with a mild sweetness of sugar cane and vanilla, followed by fresh citrus that keeps the drink lively. The coconut is just a suggestion – more a creamy sensation in the middle of the palate than a distinct aroma – and lends a roundness that many white rums lack. There are no sharp edges here and no weight, only a clean, friendly rum flavour that lets the other ingredients in the drink have their say.

Finish

The finish is short to medium, clean and lightly sweet. Vanilla and lime fade out together, with a last soft note of coconut that makes the next sip feel like the obvious thing to do.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished spirit that is ready to drink straight away. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• Mojito with fresh mint, lime, cane sugar and soda.
• Piña Colada with pineapple juice and coconut cream – this is where the coconut note comes into its own.
• With cola and a wedge of lime, simple and classic.
• Rum sour with lime juice and sugar syrup, shaken ice cold.
• A creamy Christmas drink with coconut milk, condensed milk, cinnamon and nutmeg.
