Some flavours are summer all by themselves, and ripe melon is one of them. That cold wedge from the fridge on a hot afternoon – juicy, mild and cooling in a way no other fruit quite manages. Melon Vodka takes that feeling and lays it over a clean grain vodka.

Unlike the neon-green melon liqueurs, this is a clear, light drink. The fruit is distinct but never perfumed, and the only sweetness is the mild, natural kind that belongs to the melon itself. That makes it just as useful in a schnapps glass as in a big jug of summer punch.

Colour & Appearance

In the glass the drink is water-clear and still. Nothing gives away what is coming – which makes it all the more fun to serve to someone who has not been told what is in the bottle.

Nose

The nose is soft and juicy: freshly cut honeydew melon, the slightly floral sweetness of galia, and that green coolness you find closest to the rind. There is also a suggestion of fresh cucumber, which gives the whole aroma a sense of freshness and chill.

Palate

The first impression is juicy, almost watery in the good way that only melon can be. The round, mild sweetness of honeydew fills the mouth, while the galia brings a rather more aromatic, green fruitiness. The cucumber-fresh undertone keeps the flavour light and stops it from turning sweet-shop. The grain vodka shows as a smooth, clean warmth beneath the fruit and ties everything together.

Finish

The finish is short to medium, cool and soft. Melon rind and a faint sweetness stay for a moment before the mouth feels clean again – this is a vodka that invites another sip.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished spirit that is ready to serve. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• Well chilled as a summer schnapps with air-dried ham and melon.
• With soda, cucumber slices and mint in a tall glass of ice.
• With pineapple juice and a squeeze of lime for a sunny long drink.
• In a melon martini shaken with lemon and a little sugar syrup.
• With lemon soda and melon balls in a big jug for the barbecue.

About the Essence
