All it takes is a thumb pushed through the skin of a mandarin and the whole room smells of it. That little burst of essential oils – sweet, sunny and faintly spicy – is one of the best-loved scents there is, and exactly what PR Mandarin Vodka Essence captures. The result is a flavoured vodka in the modern style: crystal clear, dry, and with a citrus fruit that tastes freshly peeled rather than like confectionery.

Unlike a liqueur, there is no sweetness here to get in the way. The mandarin simply sits on top of a clean grain vodka, which makes the drink as useful in a shot glass as it is in the shaker. It is softer and rounder than lemon vodka and juicier than orange vodka – a corner of the citrus world all its own.

Colour & Appearance

The finished vodka is water-clear and bright, without the faintest tint. Only the aroma rising from the glass as you pour gives the contents away. Well chilled, it takes on a lightly viscous, silky movement.

Nose

The nose is generous and immediate. First comes freshly grated peel with its sweet, slightly floral oils, then the flesh itself – juicy segments of mandarin and clementine. In the background is the note that makes many think of Christmas: a fruit bowl, a hint of clove and orange blossom. Last comes the vodka’s clean, faintly bready grain note.

Palate

The palate opens juicy and fruity, like biting into a ripe segment, but without the sweetness – at heart the drink is dry and restrained. The aromatic oils of the peel add lustre and an elegant, very light bitterness that keeps the flavour alert. Mid-palate there is a soft, almost honeyed roundness from the fruit, before the clean grain vodka takes over with its cool, neutral warmth. The whole is light, fresh and unusually easy to drink, with citrus that never turns sharp the way lemon can.

Finish

The finish is clean and medium in length. Mandarin peel and a small note of orange blossom linger, together with a dry, lively freshness that keeps the next sip close at hand.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit and can be enjoyed straight away. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished mandarin vodka. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• Ice-cold as a schnapps with shellfish, cured salmon or the pickled herring on the Christmas table.
• With soda, plenty of ice and a slice of mandarin – simple and thirst-quenching.
• In a Cosmopolitan in place of citrus vodka, with cranberry juice and lime.
• With tonic and a sprig of rosemary for a fragrant long drink.
• Topped with sparkling wine and a twist of peel as a festive welcome drink.
