PR Captain’s Schnapps Essence 25 L

On the coast, schnapps has always belonged with the fish. When the day’s catch was on the table – fried herring, pickled herring, smoked mackerel – a bottle of golden spiced spirit stood there too, a little sweeter and rounder than the austere varieties found inland. Captain’s Schnapps is a tribute to that tradition: a friendly, warm schnapps with caraway, aniseed and fennel, rounded off with a winey sweetness.

The essence in 25-litre format has been developed for producers, wholesalers and food companies. One drum makes 937.5 litres of finished schnapps, which comes to over 1,300 bottles of 700 ml. The profile is a crowd-pleaser in the best sense of the word – this is a schnapps that sells on being easy to drink and one that customers gladly come back to.

Colour & Appearance

The finished schnapps takes on a golden colour, like light amber or old gold. It is clear and warm in tone, and the sweetness gives it a slightly fuller movement in the glass.

Nose

The nose is soft and sweetly spiced. Aniseed and fennel are furthest forward with their liquorice-like coolness, while caraway provides a bready, warm base. Added to that is a winey note of raisins, dried apricots and nuts, along with a little vanilla and orange peel.

Palate

The palate is round and generous. The caraway is distinct but never stern, the aniseed brings sweetness and freshness, and the fennel ties the two together. The winey sweetness – with hints of fortified wine, raisin and a little toffee – settles like a soft cushion beneath the spices and makes the schnapps remarkably easy to drink. A suggestion of toasted oak gives just enough dryness at the close that the sweetness never turns sticky. The result is a schnapps that works equally well with salty fish and with a rich, fatty sausage.

Finish

The finish is medium-long and warm, with aniseed, raisin and caraway fading softly and a small toasted note at the end.

How to Use

Mix with neutral spirit or vodka. 18.67 ml makes 700 ml of finished schnapps. Concentrated 37.5 times – 1 ml of essence equals 37.5 ml of finished drink. Instructions are on the label.

About the Essence

Captain’s Schnapps is part of the PR (Prestige) series. It is sweeter and more aniseed-led than G.P. and lighter in style than Equator, and so fills a place of its own in an aquavit range.

The high concentration of the essence gives a low cost per bottle, a small storage footprint and simple dosing whatever the batch size. The flavour is consistent between deliveries, so the end product remains the same year after year.
