PR Hunter’s Schnapps Essence 20 ml
There is one bottle that always seems to be lying in the freezer, whether you find yourself in a hunting lodge, a student hall or a bar with a sticky floor: the dark herbal schnapps. It is neither a liqueur nor a true bitter but something in between – sweet enough to slip down easily, bitter enough to stay interesting, and so richly spiced that nobody can quite name everything in it.
PR Hunter’s Schnapps gives you exactly that style. Mixed with spirit and sugar, it becomes a semi-bitter, deeply aromatic schnapps in which liquorice and anise meet citrus peel, warm spices and roots. It is made to be drunk cold, in good company, and it has a habit of running out sooner than you planned.
Colour & Appearance
The finished schnapps is dark brown, almost black in the bottle, with reddish chestnut glints when the light falls through the glass. The sugar gives it a lightly syrupy body, and after a few hours in the freezer it pours slowly and feels like velvet.
Nose
The nose is spice rack and herb garden rolled into one. Liquorice root and star anise arrive first, followed by dried orange peel and a fresh note of ginger. Behind them sit clove, cinnamon and cardamom, and right at the bottom there is an earthy, rooty tone that hints at the bitterness to come.
Palate
The first impression is sweet and soft, with liquorice and anise to the fore. Then the spices unfold: the heat of ginger, the warmth of clove and the dry sweetness of cinnamon, while orange peel adds a bitter-fruity glow. Halfway through the sip the rooty bitterness takes over and tightens everything up, so the sweetness never turns sticky. Served ice cold, the sweetness is reined in further and the spices step forward more clearly – that is when this schnapps is at its very best.
Finish
The finish is long and bittersweet. Liquorice, clove and citrus peel fade slowly, and a dry, rooty bitterness lingers that makes a sip of beer afterwards feel like exactly the right idea.
How to Use
The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit plus sugar. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished drink. Instructions are on the label. It is well worth putting the finished bottle in the freezer before serving.
