PR Elderflower Schnapps Essence 20 ml

For a few short weeks in June the elder bushes stand covered in creamy-white flower heads, and the whole garden smells sweet and a little mysterious. Anyone who has ever made elderflower cordial knows what a rush it is – the flowers must be picked on a dry morning, just as they have opened, and then the season is over. Elderflower schnapps captures that moment and makes it last all year.

PR Elderflower Schnapps is the brightest voice on the schnapps table. Where wormwood and caraway are autumn and earnestness, elderflower is pure early summer: floral, airy and with a fruitiness reminiscent of muscat grapes and lychee. It is easy to like even for those who do not usually drink schnapps, and it is at least as good in a tall glass with ice and bubbles as in a small schnapps glass.

Colour & Appearance

The finished schnapps is clear with a very pale, light-yellow shimmer – like diluted elderflower cordial held against the light. Delicate and summery.

Nose

The nose is unmistakable: sweet, pollen-scented elderflowers, like leaning over the cordial pan just as the blossoms have gone in. Around the floral note there is muscat grape and white peach, a fresh streak of lemon zest and a little green nuance of newly mown grass that keeps the aroma from turning perfumed.

Palate

The palate is light, floral and finely balanced. Elderflower carries all the way through, with its singular blend of honeyed blossom sweetness and grapey fruit. The lemon gives a gentle tartness that keeps the flavour lively, and a faint spiciness – a little like white pepper and coriander – is a reminder that this is, after all, a schnapps and not a cordial. The sweetness is very moderate, which makes the schnapps elegant rather than twee.

Finish

The finish is medium-long, clean and floral. Elderflower and citrus fade softly, leaving behind the feeling of a light evening on the veranda.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit and the schnapps can be enjoyed straight away. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished elderflower schnapps. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• Chilled in a schnapps glass with the pickled herring and new potatoes of the midsummer table.
• With sparkling wine, soda and mint for an elderflower Spritz.
• With tonic, cucumber and ice – floral and thirst-quenching.
• A teaspoon in a cup of tea, hot or as iced tea with lemon.
• Over strawberries and whipped cream, or stirred into stewed rhubarb.
