Some flavours are a holiday all by themselves. Coconut and light rum is one of them – the pairing that sends your thoughts drifting off to sun loungers, warm sand and a glass with a paper umbrella in it, whether it is July or February outside. The clear coconut liqueur built on white rum has earned a permanent place in every home bar, because it is so easy to like and to mix.

With PR Coconut & Rum Liqueur Essence you make it yourself. The result is a soft, sweet, transparent liqueur in which coconut takes centre stage while the rum hums away underneath as a warm, discreet bass note. Pleasant straight over ice, it really comes into its own with fruit, juice and fizzy mixers.

Colour & Appearance

The finished liqueur is water-clear and glossy, without the faintest trace of colour. The sugar lends it a lightly syrupy body that clings softly to the inside of the glass, and over ice it takes on a frosty, inviting sheen.

Nose

The nose is like cracking open a fresh coconut: sweet, milky and nutty all at once. Behind the coconut you will find vanilla pod, a little coconut cream and a light rum note with suggestions of sugar cane and white chocolate. Sunny and clean, never perfumed.

Palate

The palate opens soft and sweet with juicy coconut flesh and coconut cream. Vanilla follows close behind, together with a gentle caramel note, rather like pale raw sugar. The rum makes itself felt mostly as warmth and as a dry, clean backbone that keeps the sweetness in check – it is present, but happily leaves the whole stage to the coconut. The mouthfeel is smooth and round, almost creamy even though the liqueur is completely clear, and the strength is so neatly tucked in that the glass empties sooner than planned.

Finish

The finish is medium-long, sweet and clean. The coconut fades slowly into a note of toasted coconut flakes and vanilla, leaving a mild rum warmth on the lips.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit plus sugar. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished liqueur, which is ready to drink straight away. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• With pineapple juice and plenty of ice – two ingredients, one finished summer drink.
• With cola and a wedge of lime for a softer, coconut-scented long drink.
• In a Piña Colada with pineapple and coconut cream, blitzed with crushed ice.
• Neat over ice with a slice of fresh pineapple or lime.
• A splash over fruit salad or vanilla ice cream, or stirred into the batter for a coconut cake.
