Lemon and vodka is one of the oldest marriages in the world of drinks. Long before anyone thought of flavouring spirits with exotic fruits, people dropped lemon peel into the bottle to give their spirit brightness and freshness. It is a flavour that has never gone out of fashion, for the simple reason that it works: the essential oils of the lemon lift the purity of the vodka rather than hiding it.

PR Lemon Vodka is the straightforward, classic interpretation. There are no sweetened shortcuts here and no odd off-notes – just clear vodka with the taste of freshly grated lemon zest. It is light, dry and restrained, made to stand ice-cold on the table when the prawns and crayfish come out, and to make every vodka cocktail that little bit livelier.

Colour & Appearance

The finished vodka is water-clear and bright. Straight from the freezer it turns slightly viscous and lays a thin film of frost on the glass – exactly how a lemon schnapps ought to look.

Nose

The nose is pure citrus: freshly grated yellow peel and the tiny droplets of lemon oil that spray out when you twist a strip of zest over the glass. There is no sour juiciness here, but rather the aromatic, almost perfumed freshness of the peel, lightly supported by a cool grain note.

Palate

The palate is light, dry and very clean. The lemon peel comes first, fresh and aromatic, followed by a soft, faintly bready vodka character. Because it is the oils of the peel and not the acidity of the flesh that carry the flavour, the drink is never sour – cool and refreshing instead, with a small, elegant bitterness of the kind you find in the white pith of the lemon. No sugar rounds it off, and that is precisely why it goes so well with salty food.

Finish

The finish is short to medium, crisp and clean. The lemon oil leaves a fresh feeling on the palate and the vodka a discreet warmth. Your mouth feels clean and ready for the next bite.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit, without sugar, and the drink can be served straight away. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished lemon vodka. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• An ice-cold schnapps with prawns, crayfish, oysters and fish roe.
• A vodka tonic with a slice of lemon – fresher than the original.
• With grapefruit soda and ice, an old favourite.
• With cola and a generous wedge of lemon.

About the Essence

Lemon Vodka is the entry-level bottle among the lemon flavours of the Prestige series (PR) – light, classic and impossible to tire of. The essence is colourless, highly concentrated and easy to measure, and since nothing needs adding beyond the spirit, the bottle is ready in a moment.
