PR Brown Western Rum Essence 20 ml

Between the light white rum and the heavy, almost black one lies a golden middle way – brown rum. It has enough body and caramel to be good on its own, yet is soft and easy-going enough to be mixed into almost anything. It is the rum that was always in your parents’ drinks cabinet, and that always came in useful.

Brown Western Rum is just such a dependable companion. The name calls to mind campfires and late evenings under an open sky, and the flavour delivers what the name promises: warm caramel, vanilla and brown sugar, a pinch of mild spice and a toasted note that gives character without turning rough.

Colour & Appearance

Once mixed, the rum takes on a warm, golden-brown colour – like light syrup or polished copper – with an amber gleam when the light falls through the glass. It is clearly paler than a dark rum, yet it still has that warm shimmer a brown rum ought to have.

Nose

The nose is inviting and sweet without being heavy. Caramel and brown sugar meet vanilla and a little honey, followed by raisins and dried apricots. In the background there is lightly toasted oak, a touch of cinnamon and a hint of nuttiness, as of roasted almonds.

Palate

The palate is medium-bodied and soft. Toffee and brown sugar arrive first, but the sweetness is moderate and is soon balanced by toasted notes and a gentle, woody dryness. Vanilla binds the middle together along with raisins and a little ripe banana, while mild spice – cinnamon, a pinch of nutmeg, a little ginger – brings things to life towards the end. The rum has more weight and warmth than a white rum, but lacks the molasses-laden depth of a dark one. That is exactly why it is so useful: it has flavour enough to stand alone in a small glass, and manners enough to share one with cola, citrus or fruit juice.

Finish

The finish is medium-long and pleasantly warm. Caramel, vanilla and a dry, lightly toasted note remain, with a final sweetness of raisins.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit and can be enjoyed at once. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished rum. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• As a short in a small glass, at room temperature.
• Over ice with a twist of orange zest.
• With cola or ginger ale and a wedge of lime.
• In a rum punch with orange and pineapple juice, lime and grated nutmeg.
• In coffee with whipped cream, or in the batter for banana bread.

About the Essence
