Anyone who has picked blueberries on a late-summer morning knows that the flavour is not only in the berry. It is in the low bushes, the moss and the cool air between the spruce trees. That is the experience Blueberry Vodka sets out to capture – not sweet-shop blueberry, but the small, dark forest berry with its tart, almost wine-like character.

The result is a colourless vodka that takes people by surprise. It looks entirely neutral, yet tastes clearly and faithfully of blueberries on top of a clean grain spirit. It is one of our best-loved fruit vodkas, as much at home at a summer seafood party as in a modern mixed drink.

Colour & Appearance

The drink is completely clear – there is nothing of the berries’ blue-purple colour here. That makes it elegant in a schnapps glass and practical in mixed drinks, where it will not tint the other ingredients.

Nose

The nose is fresh and full of berries: newly picked blueberries, lightly crushed so the juice comes through. Around the fruit hovers a green, woodland note of blueberry leaves and pine needles, and deep down a soft sweetness that brings to mind freshly made jam on a waffle with cream.

Palate

The palate starts briskly, with a clean berry acidity that makes your mouth water. Then the blueberries spread out – wild, slightly grippy, with more depth than the large cultivated kind. A hint of blueberry jam rounds off the mid-palate without the drink ever becoming sweet. The grain vodka carries it all on a smooth, clean body, and the woodland undertone adds a light herbal firmness that makes the flavour feel grown-up.

Finish

The finish is clean, dry and fresh. Berry skin and a faint acidity stay for a while, together with a cool forest feeling that makes the next sip tempting.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished spirit, ready to drink straight away. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• Ice-cold as a schnapps with crayfish, pickled herring and a mature cheese tart.
• With lemon soda, ice and a handful of frozen blueberries.
• With tonic and a sprig of thyme – the forest in a glass.
• In a blueberry martini with a squeeze of lemon and a little sugar syrup.
• Drizzled over vanilla ice cream with fresh berries for a quick dessert.

About the Essence

Blueberry Vodka belongs to the PR (Prestige) series and was created to taste of berries, not of flavouring. Being colourless and dry makes it unusually versatile: it works as a schnapps with food, where a sweet drink would take over, and it lets you choose the sweetness in your mixed drinks yourself.
