Silica Sol Clarifying Agent 5L – Step 1 in Professional Two-Stage Fining
Silica sol clarifying agent (silicon dioxide) is the first step in a two-stage fining process for wine, spirits and other beverages. The negatively charged silica particles bind to proteins and suspended matter, creating optimal conditions for the subsequent chitosan stage.
The chitosan can then effectively capture and precipitate remaining haze-causing substances and unwanted compounds – delivering a crystal-clear result while preserving the flavour profile.
The product is specifically developed for the beverage industry and is used by distilleries, wine producers and beverage manufacturers who demand a reliable and consistent fining process.
The silica sol is easy to dose, works gently without affecting the aroma or taste of the beverage, and delivers reproducible results batch after batch. The container holds 5 litres and is sufficient for a large number of fining treatments.
The two-stage method using silica sol and chitosan is a vegan alternative to traditional animal-based fining agents such as gelatine and isinglass – an increasingly important advantage for producers looking to meet today's consumer demands and label their products as vegan.
Silica Sol Clarifying Agent 5L – Step 1 in Professional Two-Stage Fining
Our silica sol clarifying agent is a high-quality silicon dioxide solution specifically developed for the beverage industry. The product constitutes the first and crucial step in a proven two-stage fining process used by distilleries, wine producers and beverage manufacturers worldwide.
The container holds 5 litres and is sufficient for a large number of fining treatments.
How the two-stage fining process works
The fining process relies on the interaction between two oppositely charged fining agents that together deliver a result neither can achieve on its own:
Step 1 – Silica sol clarifying agent (this product): The silica sol consists of negatively charged silicon dioxide particles in colloidal solution. When added to the beverage, these particles bind to positively charged proteins and suspended matter. This creates microscopic aggregates and prepares the liquid for the next step. Without this pre-treatment, the subsequent chitosan step cannot work effectively, with few exceptions.
Step 2 – Chitosan (sold separately, 5L): The chitosan, which is positively charged, is added after the silica sol. It binds to the aggregates created by the silica sol and captures remaining haze-causing substances and unwanted compounds. Together they form large flocs that settle to the bottom and can be easily separated.
Advantages
- Crystal-clear beverage – Effective removal of haze, proteins and unstable compounds.
- Preserved flavour profile – A gentle process that does not affect desired aroma and taste characteristics.
- Vegan alternative – Silica sol and chitosan replace traditional animal-based fining agents such as gelatine and isinglass.
- Easy dosing – Well-established dosing protocols for different types of beverages.
- Stable shelf life – Long shelf life when stored correctly.
- Large container – 5 litres is sufficient for a large number of fining treatments, reducing order frequency and lowering the cost per treatment.
Applications
- Wine and fruit wine
- Spirits and distillates
- Cider and mead
- Other fermented beverages
- Non-alcoholic beverages requiring fining
Recommended dosage
The dosage varies depending on the type of beverage and degree of haze. As a guideline, 0.5–2 ml per litre is recommended. Add the silica sol first, stir thoroughly and allow it to work for 1–2 hours before adding chitosan as step 2. Refer to the product data sheet for detailed dosing instructions.
Storage
Store in a cool, frost-free location in the sealed original container. Protect from direct sunlight.
