There is a moment every summer when you cut open a fridge-cold melon and the juice runs across the chopping board. That feeling – cool, sweet and almost watery in the very best sense – is what FS Melon is all about. Melon is one of the mildest and most thirst-quenching fruit flavours there is, and that is exactly why it does so well in a shot.

Where many fruit shots rely on acidity and edge, Melon goes the other way: it is soft, round and cooling, with a sweetness reminiscent of honeydew and a juicy, gentle touch of watermelon. The result is a grown-up party drink that nearly everyone enjoys, even those who usually wrinkle their noses at strong flavours.

Colour & Appearance

The finished shot has a pale, summery look and a lightly syrupy body from the sugar. Out of the freezer it thickens and pours softly, and the cold glass mists over invitingly.

Nose

The nose is mild, sweet and green in a fresh way. Ripe honeydew melon dominates, with a note of cucumber and freshly cut melon rind that adds coolness. Behind it there is something that recalls a melon lollipop and pear juice – playful, but never pushy.

Palate

The palate is smooth and juicy from the first moment. The round, almost floral sweetness of honeydew settles gently over the tongue, and then comes the watery, crisp freshness that makes you think of watermelon in big wedges. Acidity is low, so the whole is mild and kind, yet the cool character keeps the shot feeling fresh rather than cloying. The spirit shows mainly as a light warmth at the end. It is at its best ice-cold – that is when the melon flavour turns extra crisp.

Finish

The finish is short to medium, clean and cooling. A soft melon sweetness stays for a while and then disappears without leaving anything heavy behind.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit, plus sugar. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished fruit shot. Instructions are on the label. Chill the finished bottle thoroughly – melon gains a great deal from the cold.

Serving Suggestions

• An ice-cold shot in frosted glasses.
• With lemon-lime soda and ice – simple, cool and delicious.
• With soda water, cucumber slices and mint for a light spritzer.
• With pineapple juice and crushed ice in a tall glass.
• Served in hollowed-out melon halves, or over melon balls for dessert.
