There is a reason the apple shot is one of the best-loved party drinks there is: it is impossible to dislike. Soft as pressed juice, sweet as a ripe autumn apple and with just enough grain-spirit character to feel grown-up. Apfel Korn is the classic style – an apple shot on a grain-spirit base – that has been passed round the table for generations at parties, in ski lodges and at harvest suppers.

The secret lies in the balance. The apple takes centre stage, juicy and red, while the mild grain note in the background provides a bready, rounded base that sets the drink apart from ordinary fruit liqueurs. The result is a shot that goes down well with almost everybody, and it also happens to be one of the very best fruit shots to build mixed drinks on. It is easy to drink – so serve it with the same good judgement you bring to everything else that tastes good.

Colour & Appearance

The finished drink is glossy and a touch syrupy, with a calm, soft flow in the glass. Chilled, it turns smooth and rounded, just as an apple shot should be.

Nose

The nose is autumn in the orchard: red, ripe apples, freshly pressed apple juice and a little apple peel. Behind the fruit there is a mild, grainy note like newly baked white bread, and a faint suggestion of honey and cinnamon.

Palate

The palate is juicy and generous. Sweet red apples set the tone, followed by the deeper fruitiness of cloudy pressed juice and a small, fresh acidity that makes the mouth water. The grain note steals in mid-palate – soft, lightly bready and warming – and gives the drink structure without taking over. The sweetness is evident but balanced, and the whole recalls cold apple juice with a grown-up twist. With a fizzy mixer or apple juice it becomes a long drink that tastes like apple pie in liquid form.

Finish

The finish is soft and medium-long, with apple peel, pressed juice and a last mild warmth from the grain. Clean, fruity and free of sharp edges.

How to Use

The essence is mixed with vodka or neutral spirit plus sugar. 20 ml makes 750 ml of finished apple shot. Instructions are on the label.

Serving Suggestions

• Well-chilled shot – a classic to raise a toast with.
• With apple juice and ice in a tall glass, garnished with a slice of apple.
• With lemon soda or ginger ale for a fresh long drink.
